Finding Sor Maria de Agreda in New Mexico

Saturday, September 28, 2019

She was a nun who mystically traveled to New Mexico in the 1600s and met with indigenous tribes. The legend of her travels to New Mexico survives into the present day, in art, literature, performance and public commemoration. However, did you know that she was as famous for her theological writing as for her travels? In early Mexico and New Mexico, her works were read, painted, and printed and she was one of the best-known writers of her day. In this talk, Dr. Nogar discusses Sor Maria as an author and traveler, from the 17th century to the present day, and shows how the two are on and the same.
