Read Across America: Dr. Seuss Birthday Celebration and Storytime 

National Education Association’s (NEA) Read Across America: Celebrating reading and the birthday celebration of Dr. Seuss

National Education Association’s (NEA) Read Across America Day, the nation’s largest celebration of reading, expects more than 45 million readers, both young and old, to pick up a book and read.                                                                                                                                                                                        

To celebrate the fun and value of reading, the Town of Taos Community Events,  Taos Youth & Family Center, Friends of the Public Library, Op. Cit. Books, Paso a Paso Children Count, SOMOS, Taos Municipal Schools SRCL Grant Literacy Coaches, Twirl Play & Discovery Space, Taos Academy of Performing Arts (A.P. Arts), Taos Academy Charter School National Honor Society, Taos Children’s Library, and Walgreens are asking you to join NEA and many of America’s leading literacy, youth, and civic groups in bringing a nation of readers together for a flurry of reading excitement!

***NEW***  Please join us for Read Across America Dr. Seuss Storytime, a week long Community Collaboration of Reading at Op. Cit. Bookstore, Twirl Play & Discovery Space, Taos Youth & Family Center and Taos Children’s Library from March 2 - 6, 2020.  

 Monday, March 2nd - 11:00am, Op. Cit. Bookstore, located on 124 Bent Street, the book title is “One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish”, and the readers are Mary Raskin will be reading the book in English and Noemi DeBodisco will be reading the book in Spanish.  Op. Cit. Bookstore will provide snacks and water to the attendees. (www.opcit.com)   

 Tuesday, March 3rd - 11:00am, Twirl Play & Discovery Space, located on 225 Camino de la Placita, the book title is “Green Eggs and Ham”, and the reader is Amber Vasquez.  The reading is part of the regularly scheduled Theater Play Class. (www.twirltaos.org) 

Wednesday, March 4th - 4:00pm—4:30pm, Taos Youth & Family Center, located on 407 Paseo del Canon, East, the book title will be the Audience Choice.  Readers will bring a collection of Dr. Seuss stories for young and old, and let the audience choose from “The cat in the Hat, Green Eggs and Ham, The Lorax, Horton Hatches the Egg”, and other titles.  The readers are Waltraud (Wally) Kuerschner and Ariana Kramer.  Come enjoy a fun section of Dr. Seuss stories with long-time Taos educator Wally Kuerschner and her daughter Ariana Kramer.  All ages welcome. Thursday, March 5th - 10:30am, Taos Children’s Library, located on 402 Camino de la Placita, the book title will be “Bartholomew and the Oobleck” and the readers are Cassie Garcia and Raquel Martinez.  The reading will be followed with a craft on how to make the infamous Oobleck. (Taosgov.com)   

Friday, March 6th - 2:30pm, Taos Youth & Family Center, located on 407 Paseo del Canon, East, the book title will be “The Cat in the Hat” and the reader is Melissa Quintana. This reading is scheduled during the Dr. Seuss Birthday Celebration. (Taosgov.com).

The Dr. Seuss Birthday Celebration is Friday, March 6, 2020 from 1:00pm to 4:00pm at Taos Youth & Family Center for children of all ages.  The first 300 children attending the Birthday Celebration will receive a free reading bag and a free children’s book (while supplies last). The schedule is as follows:  Reading of “The Cat in the Hat” by Melissa Quintana, Taos Municipal Schools SRCL Grant Literacy Coach, Reading of NEA’s Read Across America Proclamation by a Representative of the Mayor’s Office, Sing Happy Birthday to Dr. Seuss and enjoy Birthday Cookies and Taos Academy of Performing Arts (A.P. Arts) Dance Demonstration/Lesson focused on Dr. Seuss story “My Many Colored Days” at 3:00pm.  Dress up as your favorite Dr. Seuss Character (a prize for the first 13 children).  Prizes donated by Walgreens.     

Ongoing activities include Balloon Animals, Activity Table, Bowling, Face painting, Dr. Seuss Themed Bookmarks, Crafty fun with Twirl and a Dr. Seuss 1 Fish, 2 Fish activity with Paso a Paso Children Count.  Special guests will be The Cat in the Hat, The Grinch, and Thing 1 and 2.  You may purchase candy and drinks for $1.00, pizza slices and pretzels with cheese for $3.00 and nachos for $4.00.  Proceeds will benefit Our Lady of Guadalupe Youth Group.                                                      

Our goal is to show America’s children the joy of reading and build a nation of readers-on Dr. Seuss’ Birthday and every day.
