Summer Reminder: Every Thursday evening, 6-8 pm at Taos Plaza, free music through Taos Plaza Live, www.taosplazalive.com, sponsored by the Taos County Chamber of Commerce, the Town of Taos, and many other community supporters…and every weekend morning, Taos Farmers Markets in the Town Hall parking lot.

7/4 – 12 noonish, Arroyo Seco July 4th Parade and Outdoor Celebration – a wonderful local tradition of fantastic food, music and homemade floats – many pulled by an array of Taos trusty steeds (motorized and otherwise).  Then as night falls, the Taos Volunteer Fire Department and the Town of Taos offer a free fireworks professional extravaganza, viewable from nearly everywhere in the Town.  Ground zero is on Salazar Rd. near Taos County’s Filemon Sanchez Park.

7/4 through 10/10 - Taos Sacred Labyrinths Series.  Living Labyrinths for Peace, Inc. has organized labyrinth exhibits, workshops, and walks throughout Taos this year as part of the Town of Taos traveler education theme, Return to Sacred Places.  Unlike mazes with many confusing paths, labyrinths have one path to the center and back.  Many experience greater focus, and inner peace through walking labyrinths.  Offerings start 7/4 and run through October, and most are free.  See www.TaosSacredPlaces.com calendar and www.livinglabyrinthsforpeace.org for details, or contact Sandra Wasko-Flood, 575-377-6369, waskoart@comcast.net, cell 703-217-6706.

7/9 – 7 to 9 pm, Taos Senior Olympics, through Ancianos Senior Citizens Center, is having a comedy show fundraiser at the Hotel Don Fernando, 1005 Paseo Del Pueblo Sur, $7, must be over 21 years of age, some adult language.  All proceeds will help with transportation costs for the Taos Senior Olympics team traveling to Las Cruces 7/28 for the New Mexico Summer Games.  Emcee Marc Kaplan. 7/9 through 11 - 25th Annual Taos Pueblo Pow Wow, Taos Pueblo Pow Wow Grounds.  A pow wow is the common fiber which draws Indian people together. It is a time for sharing with old friends and making new friends; a time for singing and dancing. It is a time for trading - craft goods and songs. 7/9 – 7 pm, SOMOS Summer Writers Series Kick Off -- ongoing series throughout the summer at Rane Gallery, 214 Ledoux Street.  This Friday night series, put on by Taos-based Society of the Muse of the Southwest (SOMOS), will feature readings and teachings from writers Arthur Sze, Carol Moldaw, Sawnie Morris, Davida Singer, and Jon Davis. The fiction writers include Jonis Agee, David Perez, Monique Parker, Natalie Goldberg, Eddie Lewis, Melanie Sumner, and Summer Wood. 7/10 through 16 - Food for Fines at the Town of Taos Public Library.  Fines will be waived on overdue materials - one waived for every non-perishable food item donated.  Lost/damaged items excluded.  Food will benefit local food bank.

7/10 – 1 to 4 pm, (two speakers) -- Descansos: The Sacred Landscape of New Mexico.  Joan E. Alessi, photographer, will explore the cultural and religious significance, as well as the importance of descansos, or roadside memorials, as an art form.  On the same afternoon Sylvia Rodriguez, UNM Professor, will present, Ritual, Meaning, and Sacred Places, an illustrated talk on the interactive processes, involving ritual, language, and symbolism, through which people sacralize space and place.   Sponsored by the Friends of Taos Public Library.  All part of Taos’ 2010 traveler education theme, Return to Sacred Places, www.TaosSacredPlaces.com.> 

7/9 through 11 – 10th Anniversary National Landscape Conservation System BLM Celebration Events: The New Mexico BLM is celebrating the 10th Anniversary of the NLCS by hosting a series of events.  The NLCS mission is to conserve, protect and restore nationally significant landscapes recognized for their outstanding cultural, ecological, and scientific values – in Taos these areas include the Wild Rivers and Orilla Verde Recreation Areas.  For events 7/10-11, bring a hat, favorite chair, and wear sunscreen.  Directions to the Wild Rivers Recreation Area:  from Taos, follow NM 68 north 7 miles and take NM 522 approximately 20 miles to Questa. 7/19 through 23 - The Spiritual Legacy of Ram Dass, Be Here Now.  Join the Sage Institute/UNM this summer for a 5-day intensive celebrating the 40th anniversary of Ram Dass' landmark book, Be Here Now.  Location: Chamisa Mesa School, Taos.  Through study, meditation, chanting, guest speakers, visiting sacred sites, and multi-media presentations, the seminar will explore the profound impact these teachings have made on our culture and the significant shift in consciousness that unfolded in their wake. Led by long-time Ram Dass student and friend, author Mirabai Starr, and sponsored by the Sage Institute/UNM, this celebration will include a special appearance by Ram Dass via live webcast following a public screening of Fierce Grace on 7/22. 7/23 through 25 - Fiestas de Taos,Taos Plaza,is a community celebration honoring the two patron saints of Taos, Santa Ana and Santiago. The annual event, popularly referred to as "The Taos Fiestas," traditionally is a time when everyone is invited to put aside their labor for two days and enjoy the leisure of the holy days. This year’s ceremonies are themed Returning to Sacred Places or Regresando a Lugares Sagrados.  Attendees can expect a celebration with great music and performances from some of Taos' most talented.  A historic parade, children’s parade, mariachi and traditional dances will be some of the highlights of the 3-day event.  Experience this time honored cultural tradition, www.fiestasdetaos.com for more info.

7/29 – 4 to 6 pm, Artshare for the Land, artist closing reception,“Sacred Places: Sacred Land”, Historic Taos Inn, benefiting the Taos Land Trust.  ArtShare for the Land provides opportunities for artists to give back by supporting Taos Land Trust's efforts to protect the land that is their muse. And it provides opportunities for its members, art patrons and the community to purchase beautiful artwork, while supporting both the artists and permanent land conservation.  Local artists were invited to submit a piece of work that had some connection to the Town of Taos marketing theme of “Return to Sacred Places”. Images were juried and the result is an exciting, colorful and eclectic mix of artworks – something for everyone’s taste. Event Description:  20 students maximum, 3rd-6th graders, 3 hours
Students walk labyrinths to stimulate creativity, express wishes, make decisions, resolve conflicts:  to find a path from inner peace to world peace.  Through posters and diagrams, students learn labyrinth vocabulary, history and geography.  They create Labyrinth Books with designs in many media and creative writing of their labyrinth experiences. Together with their classmates, they paint a 12 foot square canvas labyrinth which they dedicate to their school. Here they celebrate important events in their lives and those of their communities.  They learn to live labyrinths for peace by making peace wishes for themselves, family, friends, community and the world.
